How to Swaddle a Baby: A Step-by-Step Guide for New Parents

How to Swaddle a Baby: A Step-by-Step Guide for New Parents

Swaddling has been used for centuries to help newborns feel safe and secure. By mimicking the snug environment of the womb, swaddling helps calm your baby, reduce startle reflexes, and promote better sleep.

If you're a new parent wondering how to do it right - this guide is for you. Below, we'll walk you through the swaddling process and show you the safest and easiest way to wrap your baby using our breathable, organic swaddle blankets.

What You'll Need

  • A lightweight, breathable swaddle blanket like our Organic Jersey Swaddle - Fog
  • A safe, flat surface for wrapping your baby
  • Clean hands and a calm environment

Step-by-Step: How to Swaddle a Baby

Step 1: Lay the blanket flat

Fold one corner of the blanket down to create a triangle. Place your baby in the centre with shoulders just below the fold.

Step 2: Secure the first arm

Gently straighten your baby's right arm. Take the left corner of the blanket across their body and tuck it under their left side.

Step 3: Fold the bottom

Bring the bottom corner of the blanket up over your baby's feet and tuck it loosely under the shoulder fold.

Step 4: Wrap the second arm

Straighten the left arm and bring the right corner of the blanket across the baby's body. Tuck it securely but not tightly.

Safety Tips

We always recommend following the safe sleep guidelines of Rednose Australia.
  • Always lay your baby on their back to sleep
  • Keep the swaddle snug around the torso, but loose at the hips to prevent hip dysplasia
  •  Always keep baby’s face and head uncovered while sleeping
  • Stop swaddling as soon as your baby starts attempting to roll over (around 2-3 months)

What Swaddle Blanket is Best?

Choose a breathable, soft material like our organic muslin or jersey swaddles. They are large enough to wrap comfortably and are gentle on newborn skin.
